Professor Konstantinos Stratakis is a co-founder and Director of ASTREA. He is internationally recognized as a geneticist, endocrinologist, translational researcher, and executive leader. Professor Stratakis served as Scientific Director of ELPEN in Athens, Greece (2021-2024) and led efforts to establish their Research Institute, expected to open in 2025. Currently, he is Director of Human Genetics and Precision Medicine at IMBB, FORTH, in Heraklion, Greece, and coordinates the Greek Network of Precision Medicine in Molecular Oncology.<\/p>\n

His education includes medical training (Athens, Greece, 1989), pediatric endocrinology, and medical genetics (Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA, 1990-1996), holding degrees in Medicine, a Doctorate, and two honorary PhD titles. He is also a graduate of the Executive Leadership Program at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. In the United States, Professor Stratakis led the genetics and endocrinology programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH\/NICHD) and the NICHD Intramural Research Program (1,100 employees, $200 million annual budget) (2009-2021).<\/p>\n

As a researcher, Professor Stratakis has focused on oncogenetics, describing several genetic defects, including a syndrome named after him (Carney-Stratakis syndrome). He has authored over 800 publications and served in significant editorial roles for leading journals. He has received numerous awards, including the 2009 Ernst Oppenheimer Award (American Endocrine Society), NIH Merit and Director’s Awards, and Visiting Professorships at academic centers worldwide. He received the International Award in 2018 (European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology), the Dale Medal in 2019 (British Endocrine Society), and honorary memberships from the Hellenic Cardiological Society (2017) and the Hellenic Endocrine Society (2019). Professor Stratakis served as President of the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) in 2018-2019. He is an elected member of the American Pediatric Society (APS), American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and serves as Chief Editor of the journal HORMONES.<\/p>\n
